Refined Reads Book Club – May Pick
This month, we're reading The Turner House by Angela Flournoy and meeting up to discuss the book on June 1, 6:30pm at our U District store.
Flournoy's beautifully wrought debut takes us back to the turmoil of 2008 as it hones in on a family whose childhood home has become a subject of contention. Ailing matriarch Viola Turner has lived in their house on Yarrow Street in Detroit for more than 50 years, raising 13 children, but she now lives with eldest son Cha-Cha. The uninhabited house creaks under the weight of a mortgage ten times the amount its worth and the adult Turner children are called home to decide what should be done with it.
This National Book Award finalist is funny, heartbreaking, and profound. The author offers us an astute observation of a family's peculiarities and an intimate depiction of a home haunted—by memories, sacrifice, lies, family myths, history, love, and perhaps even a real ghost.
